Basic Needs Director Jen Sturtevant Wins NASPA New Professional Award | December 1, 2023
Since her appointment as interim care manager in 2019, Sturtevant has been at the forefront of expanding the Basic Needs program. Under her guidance, the program has grown from a single-person initiative to a full-fledged department with a dedicated team committed to addressing food and housing insecurity among students. Basic Needs now encompasses several resources including the Warrior Food Pantry, food distribution, emergency grants, temporary housing, nutrition education and others.

Warrior Food Pantry Distributing Free Food and Hope | October 20, 2023
The Central Valley supplies roughly one fourth of the world's food, but students at Stanislaus State are struggling more than ever to secure healthy, consistent meals. Thankfully, help is literally right around the corner.

CalFresh Healthy Living Newsletter - Campus Highlight | September 2023
Stanislaus State students had the opportunity to join Basic Needs for a delightful and nutritious experience at a Healthy Snack Day tabling event! The event featured two nourishing on the go snacks: Cuties and Trial mix. With leveraged funds, they were able to provide incentives which included a collection of co-branded CalFresh Healthy Living Healthy Snack Day themed stickers and a reusable strawberry ice pack with their school logo printed on it. As a quick and short activity, students were able to participate by completing the sentence on a Healthy Snack Day pledge card that read “I love to eat healthy snacks like…”. Staff also provided insightful tips on mindful eating and healthy snack alternatives. A total of 85 students shared their healthy snack ideas and had the opportunity to indulge in delicious snacks while prioritizing their health and wellness!
Wells Fargo Supports Students with $20,000 Donation | February 23, 2023
Wells Fargo has donated $20,000 to the Stanislaus State California Faculty Association Campus Cares Fund to address hunger and hardship among students in emergency situations. Donated during the fall semester, the gift is evenly split between the Food Insecurity Fund and the Student Emergency Fund.

Warriors at Work: Leticia Caballero | February 7, 2023
“A lot of students see me as the ‘pantry person’ because I’m responsible for the Warrior Food Pantry, and I spend a lot of time in the pantry,” said Caballero, basic needs coordinator for the Stockton Campus. “But there are lots of ways I can help students. If they are experiencing financial or housing insecurity, they should contact me. We can talk through it, and I can connect them to resources.”

“It makes me feel proud and grateful that there are kind people in our community who want to make the world better for others and give back,” Sturtevant said. “That’s a big takeaway for me. Everyone is in that room because they care. That feels pretty amazing.”

New Food Pantry Opens at Stockton Campus | November 6, 2022
After more than two years of offering twice-a-month pop-up food pantries, the Stanislaus State Stockton Campus has opened a brick-and-mortar Warrior Food Pantry stocked with an array of free food items, including fresh produce, refrigerated and frozen foods, and toiletries.

Basic Needs Can Be a Life Saver | November 14, 2021
“Without a doubt, if it wasn’t for the help from housing, faculty, Chartwells dining services and Jen and Joann (Curtis) in Basic Needs, I would have dropped out,” Carr said. “They’ve allowed me to focus on my studies, and even with the COVID-19 pandemic and with my allergies, the last three semesters I’ve made the Dean’s List. Now, I’m starting my senior year.”

CFA Donation Puts Student Emergency Fund Campaign Over the Top | November 23, 2020
The Stan State CFA chapter made the donation because faculty members are committed to helping students attain their goals even when their educational journey is threatened by financial hardship, according to Professor Dave Colnic, CFA chapter president and chair of Stan State’s Department of Political Science, Public Administration and Leadership Studies.

Stanislaus State Distributes CARES Act Funding | May 19, 2020
“Many of our students and their families have experienced job loss, food insecurity and other threats to their well-being because of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The CARES Act funds will provide much needed relief,” Stan State President Ellen Junn said. “Our generous supporters have graciously donated to the Warrior Food Pantry and Student Emergency Fund, and the federal assistance will enhance what we’ve been able to provide our students.”
