RICOCHET IS A 76 MINUTE DOCUMENTARY about the trial of an undocumented immigrant, José Ines García Zárate, for the accidental shooting of Kate Steinle on Pier 14 in San Francisco in July of 2015. The trial gains national attention when Donald Trump exploits this on the campaign trail, igniting an anti-immigrant movement he rides to the Republican nomination and eventually the White House. The national media take the story and make it a referendum on San Francisco’s Sanctuary City policy. So the stakes are high when the trial finally begins in fall 2017, with the defense led by two San Francisco public defenders: Chief Attorney Matt Gonzalez and Francisco Ugarte, head of the office’s Immigration Defense Unit. The work of Gonzalez and Ugarte on this case is overseen by San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi, who passed away before the film was completed.
RICOCHET EXAMINES SEVERAL THEMES that intersect with this trial: the criminal justice system, the immigration debate, racism and xenophobia, the messaging we receive from the realms of politics and the media, and the critical role public defenders play in our legal system.
Free event: no tickets required for students, faculty, and staff. COVID 19 safety protocols will be enforced.
