The Painting Program prepares students to work independently in developing a distinct personal vision. This is achieved through the examination of the traditions, conventions, material practices and methodologies inherent to the discipline of painting. The curriculum is structured to develop perceptual, conceptual and expressive capabilities; students are asked to locate and explore their practice within social, historical, and contemporary context(s). The majority of painting courses begin with oils, but as students progress, they are encouraged to explore techniques, applications, substrates, pigments and paint as they become relevant to their projects. Instead of drawing rigid boundaries between discipline areas, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches are encouraged. Courses in the Painting Area impart students with strong technical knowledge of traditional media, while tools and techniques are introduced in conjunction with the potential range of meanings they can embody or express.

The Painting Program studios are large and fully equipped, with plenty of natural light; the facilities allow students to create a variety of work ranging from large-scale drawings to oil paintings. Recent acquisitions have introduced new equipment and technologies, including drawing software intended for ideation and project development. The program offers auxiliary equipment such as projectors, hand tools, and lighting equipment for documentation of work. Workshops on panel and stretcher construction are held periodically, and live model sessions are held frequently.
