This program is designed for students intending to pursue graduate studies in video and time-based media. The purpose is to give students exposure to the practice of various time-based media at an advanced level and to enable them to work independently in original and significant ways.

Beginning in the ART 1040 Foundation Digital Media course, students learn to create a variety of digital media, including at least one digital video project. Focused on the development of students as independent filmmakers and video artists, students gain experience in the distinct stages of video production - from planning to filming to editing, to review and critique of the finished project. These experiences are built upon with more depth in each of the upper-division courses, examining the specific strategies used by diverse types of video and time-based media in each course.

Within the upper-division video production courses students work in small teams to create, produce, and edit video projects. This group collaboration gives them hands-on experience of working as part of a film crew. Rotation of members’ roles and the teams they are assigned to work with help them understand what each role entails, how to best coordinate their efforts, and how to communicate with a variety of different team members.

Facilities

The Digital Media Studio contains 24 student workstations with drawing monitors and the Adobe Creative Suite, Unity 3D and Maya installed a small green screen wall, a VR workstation, a scanner, and two printers.

Students can check out Panasonic GH5 camcorder kits which include a fluid-head tripod, Zhiyun motorized gimbal, Rhode on-camera microphone, lavalier microphone, headphones, and a ND lens filter. Also available are ring light kits, stand light kits, reflectors, greenscreens, boom mics, lighting cookies and color filters, GoPro kits, external monitors, and video editing laptops.
