Background Checks
View information for fingerprint scans, livescans, and background checks.
Do you need to be fingerprinted or live scanned for a background check? Stanislaus State Police Department provides Live Scan and fingerprint services to the general public and by appointment only. Stanislaus State Police Department is located in Turlock, CA. Many employers, both public and private, are required to perform background checks. Our Automated Fingerprint and Live Scan system completes such background checks by comparing fingerprints received against a database of criminal fingerprints to determine if there is a criminal record.
Low cost Live Scan and fingerprinting services have never been so easy in the city of Turlock.
Securing a criminal background check prior to employment, licensure, or certification provides a hiring or licensing authority an important resource, which aids in the evaluation of the applicant. These applicants are often candidates for positions that place them in a position of trust for some of California’s most vulnerable citizenry, elderly, and dependent adults and children. As such, it is vital for the hiring or licensing authority to be aware of specified active arrests or convictions. Entrusting applicants with the responsibility of the position prior to a criminal background check potentially jeopardizes the safety and integrity of the workplace and may leave some individuals exposed to unnecessary harm. Employment and licensing authorities may also face legal liability if applicants with specified active arrests or convictions are employed or licensed when the statute prohibits such action based on the successful completion of a criminal background check.
If an FBI criminal background check is requested, the fingerprint images are forwarded to the FBI to perform a fingerprint-based search of records in the national criminal history database. If the applicant’s fingerprints match fingerprints in the national criminal history database, the FBI sends the DOJ a cumulative RAP sheet that contains criminal history information from any states or federal agencies that have reported the information to the FBI. If there is not a matching disposition for every out-of-state or federal arrest, the DOJ is again mandated by statute to perform the “genuine effort” to obtain the missing disposition information, just as with California arrests that are missing disposition information. Once the “genuine effort” is fulfilled, a DOJ technician must review the updated Rap sheet and prepare the background check response according to the statutory dissemination criterion.
Once the transaction is received by the DOJ, the fingerprint images are used to automatically search against all other fingerprint images in the fingerprint database. If there are no fingerprints matching the applicant’s fingerprints, the transaction is generally processed electronically without technician intervention within 48 to 72 hours. If an applicant’s fingerprints match fingerprints in the database, the associated RAP sheet must be reviewed by a technician. This is a manual process that can take an indeterminate amount of time. The applicant agency is automatically sent a delay notice response. Questions or status inquiries related to a delayed transaction cannot be responded to, as there is no pertinent information that can be statutorily provided until the manual review of the transaction is complete. The next communiqué the applicant agency will receive is the completed response. Please note that additional time.
The Applicant Background Check Status provides the applicant with a simplistic view of the fingerprint background check status; this status should not be construed as an indication of the employment or licensing status. The review of an applicant’s criminal history is only one piece of an agency’s process in making a suitability determination. You can view your status online via the DOJ applicant Background Check Status website . The ATI Number and Date of Birth are required to perform a search.

Stanislaus State Students
Information for Students:
California State University, Stanislaus students will need a Live Scan fingerprint clearance for various reasons: to enter into the K-12 educational systems, for Teacher Credentialing, tutoring, observation, and for employment on campus.
Student Live Scans (Except Teacher Credential)
Clearances are received by the University Police Department and remain on file for five years. A request form must be submitted by your Professor in order to have their class roster reviewed. Students will not need to be fingerprinted for other campus courses as long as the student has uninterrupted enrollment. The clearance is valid at both the Turlock and Stockton campuses.
Faculty members who have classes requiring Livescan clearance must submit a Livescan Clearance Request by August 1st, 2024. This request is essential to ensure that all students in your class meet the necessary clearance requirements. To make this process as smooth as possible, please follow the guidelines outlined below:
Information for Faculty
1. Submit a Request for Livescan Clearance
Prior to the Fall semester, you must submit a request for Livescan clearance by filling out the online form. In the form, please include the following information:
- Class Name, number, and section.
- Upload Class Rosters: As part of the request, you will need to upload your class rosters. Your roster must be in Excel format and include Student ID numbers for all students. This will help us in processing the clearances effectively.
2. Notify of Roster Changes
If there are any changes to your class roster after the beginning of the semester, it is your responsibility to inform us promptly. Please send an email to livescan@csustan.edu with the updated roster information.
3. Communicate with Students
Additionally, we kindly request that you communicate with your students and inform them promptly about the requirement for your class. It is crucial that you communicate with your students and instruct them to visit the University Police Department Monday through Friday 8 a.m- 6:45 p.m. to complete the Livescan fingerprinting process. Please stress the utmost importance of ensuring that students bring their student ID numbers with them. This is essential as it allows us to accurately match the student Livescan results with the information provided on the faculty's class rosters. Livescans without proper ID numbers will not receive clearance for the class, which could lead to unnecessary delays for your students. Your vigilance in conveying this requirement to your students is greatly appreciated.
It is important to note that the priority deadline for completing the request for Livescan clearance is August 1st, 2024. It is imperative to meet this date to ensure that clearance results are obtained in a timely manner and to provide students with enough time to complete their fingerprints. Requests not received by the priority deadline may result in a delay in clearance results for your students.
Once you have submitted the form, please allow 2 weeks of processing time to receive your Livescan live link that you can use to check the up-to-date results of your students' Livescan clearances.
If you have any questions or concerns about the new process, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at livescan@csustan.edu, and we will be happy to assist you.
