Advising Basics
Appointments can be scheduled through Warrior Connect. Select the appointment type that best fits your needs and choose an available date and time.
If you only have a quick question, consider attending Walk-In Wednesday or another drop-in advising opportunity.
Appointments are best for:
- Long-term academic planning
- Reviewing degree progress
- Graduation planning
- Exploring or changing majors
- Creating an academic plan
Drop-In Wednesday is designed for quick questions such as:
- Registration assistance
- Reviewing your STAN Degree Progress
- Course selection questions
- Understanding policies or procedures
- General advising referrals
Students are encouraged to meet with an advisor:
- Before registering for classes
- When planning future semesters
- If considering a change of major or minor
- When you have questions about your academic progress
- Before applying for graduation
Meeting early in the semester provides the most flexibility before registration begins.

Yes. Advisors can explain the major change process, discuss how a change may affect your graduation timeline, and connect you with the appropriate department.
Some majors have additional admission requirements.
Some students may have an advising hold that must be cleared before registration.
Even if an advising appointment is not required, meeting with an advisor is encouraged to ensure you're making progress toward your degree.

Before enrolling elsewhere, consult your advisor and use ASSIST.org (for California community colleges) to determine whether coursework may satisfy Stan State requirements. Always obtain appropriate approvals before taking courses at another institution.
Different campus offices place holds for different reasons. An advisor can help you understand what the hold means and direct you to the office responsible for resolving it.
Repeating a course may improve your GPA and satisfy degree requirements, but university policies apply. Meet with an advisor to discuss how repeating a course fits into your academic plan.
Registration
Options may include:
- Joining a waitlist (if available)
- Requesting a permission number when appropriate
- Selecting an alternate course
- Meeting with your advisor to adjust your academic plan

A permission number is issued by the academic department or instructor and may allow you to enroll in a course when certain restrictions exist. Permission numbers do not guarantee enrollment and do not override university registration policies.
Graduation
Review your STAN Degree Progress regularly and meet with your advisor to discuss your progress. As you approach graduation, your Graduation Advisor will help you:
- Monitor degree completion
- Submit your graduation application
- Verify remaining requirements
- Prepare for graduation
Students should apply by the published university deadlines once they are approaching completion of their degree requirements.

Campus Resources
Financial aid questions are handled by the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office. Your advisor can refer you to the appropriate office if needed.

Student Records & Privacy
Student education records are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Without your written permission, university staff cannot discuss your academic records with parents or other individuals except as permitted by law.
Yes. You may invite a parent, family member, or trusted supporter to attend your appointment. However, advisors can only discuss your academic records if you have completed the appropriate FERPA authorization.
