What is a Permission Number?

A permission number is a unique code that allows you to enroll in a course when enrollment restrictions prevent you from registering.

Transfer Prerequisite

You completed a prerequisite at another institution and your transfer credit has not yet been posted.

Instructor or Department Approval

The course requires instructor consent or department approval.

Registration Restriction

A restriction requires authorization from the academic department.

Important!

A permission number does not guarantee enrollment. It does not override registration deadlines, time conflicts, or other university policies.

How to Request a Permission Number

  1. Identify the department offering the course.
  2. Contact the department or instructor using your Stan State email account.
  3. Include all requested information in your email (see section below).
  4. Allow time for your request to be reviewed, especially during registration periods.

Please submit your request as early as possible.

Before You Send Your Request

When requesting a permission number, include:

  1. Your full name
  2. Your Student ID number
  3. Major
  4. Course subject, number, and section
  5. Brief explanation of why you are requesting a permission number
  6. Confirmation that you have met the prerequisites or documentation of instructor approval, if applicable

The following sample email request template can help you start an email to request a permission number from your instructor.

Subject: Permission Number Request – BIOL 2250-01

Hello,

My name is (Your Name), and I am a (Major) student (Student ID: [Student ID]).

I am requesting a permission number for (Course Subject, Number, and Section).

I am requesting enrollment because (brief explanation).

I have met the course prerequisites (or explain your situation, such as transfer credit or instructor approval).

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Note: Permission numbers are issued at the discretion of the instructor or academic department. Response times may be longer during peak registration periods.
