How to Become a Writing Tutor
Thanks for your interest in being a writing tutor at Stanislaus State. We hire once a year, with interviews conducted between May and early August, so submitting an application and supporting materials between April and June is your best opportunity to be invited for an interview. Before proceeding, know that you must be enrolled as a full-time student at Stanislaus to be eligible to work each term.
Unless they have received formal writing tutor development elsewhere, incoming tutors are required to enroll in and attend English 4600, Tutorial Projects, or English 2600, Introduction to Writing Tutoring. These courses will provide initial and ongoing tutor development. Because tutoring writing is complex, learning about composition theory, observing tutoring sessions, and participating in guided practice is essential.
A goal of the Writing Center is to become more interdisciplinary; therefore, students in all majors are encouraged to take English 4600 and become Writing Center tutors.
