Dr. Adam Fleenor
Lecturer
Department: Sociology
Research Interests:
My research is focused on Native American mapmakers and how spatial technology supports critical pedagogy and land-based knowledge-making. As part of my findings of this research, I supported the premise that Western styles of teaching and learning can benefit from Indigenous epistemology and holistic approaches in exchanges of knowledge that is anti-colonial and antiracist.
Also, I like to hike and fish :)

Dr. Andrew Gardner
Assistant Professor
Department: Biological Sciences
Research Interests:
I use molecular phylogenetics to explore the evolution of plant lineages. During my Ph.D., I studied the evolution of Oxalis with Eve Emshwiller at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. My research emphasizes mentorship and outreach, and I am constantly improving my biology teaching with diverse assessment strategies.

Department: Geography & Environmental Resources
Research Interests:
Chantelise Pells’ work focuses on community-based environmental resource governance, water governance and socio-environmental sustainability. Her current research looks at the climate change impacts on vulnerable rural communities. Chantelise’s dissertation research is a case study of participation dynamics of the local groundwater user association in Northern Baja California, Mexico. Her work specifically focuses on multi-scale power relations impacting local governance and the related socio-environmental effects. She also works to broaden understanding of human induced environmental problems and to work towards building collaborative and just solutions.

Dr. Della Winters
Assistant Professor
Department: Sociology
Research Interests:
Dr. Winters’ research examines the consequences of the expansions of the carceral state and mass surveillance, particularly within the lives of criminalized people. Using qualitative data collection methods, she explores the intersections of privilege and disadvantage (race, gender, class, sexuality, and disability) within carceral mechanisms. Dr. Winters’ most recent research traces the emergence of long-acting reversible contraceptives as the primary mechanisms of reproductive healthcare and social policy in Tennessee. This work highlights her interdisciplinary research interests in Sociology, Criminology, Law & Society, Gender & Sexuality Studies, and Family Studies.
