McNair Explorers

The McNair Explorers program is designed for students who are interested in undergraduate research and/or earning a PhD. The program is open to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors, and, in some cases, Seniors at Stan State.

Students will be introduced to research and graduate school through workshops and seminars. Students who participate in McNair Explorers will have an advantage in the McNair Scholars Program application process. (Participation in McNair Explorers does not guarantee acceptance into the McNair Scholars Program.)

Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility requirements for McNair Explorers differs a bit from eligibility for the McNair Scholars Program. For example, Freshman and Sophomore applicants to the Explorers have a more flexible GPA range. Additionally, primary consideration is given to students who are considered low-income and first-gen, and/or a member of an underrepresented group in higher education.

There are many benefits to joining the McNair Explorers, including but not limited to:

  • Mentorship
  • Academic Workshops
  • Membership in the University Honors Program (students whose current GPA falls below the required 3.0 may still participate in McNair Explorers while they raise their GPA)
  • Academic Advising
  • Research and Grad School Seminars
  • Social and Community Events
  • Streamlined McNair Program application process (contingent on completion of McNair Explorers)

Scholars who are accepted into the McNair Explorers must complete certain requirements to remain in good standing with the program, and to qualify for the streamlined McNair Scholars Program application process.

  • Attend mandatory McNair Orientation
  • Attend at least 2 workshops per semester
  • Meet with mentor at least 2 times per semester
  • Attend at least 1 Connection Circle event a month per semester
