Program History
Project Rebound was founded in 1967 by the late Professor John Irwin at San Francisco State University. Formerly incarcerated himself, Dr. Irwin earned his doctorate and became a Professor of Sociology and Criminology, dedicating his career to advancing access to higher education for individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. He established Project Rebound to support students transitioning from the juvenile and adult justice systems through the university enrollment process.
In 1952, John Irwin (1929–2010) was convicted of armed robbery and served five years in Soledad Prison. During his incarceration, he completed 24 college credits through a university extension program. After his release, he earned a B.A. from UCLA and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. He later served as a professor at San Francisco State University for 27 years, becoming an internationally recognized expert on the U.S. prison system.
Since its inception, Project Rebound has supported hundreds of formerly incarcerated students in earning bachelor’s degrees and beyond. In 2016, with support from the Opportunity Institute and CSU Chancellor Timothy White, the program expanded into a statewide consortium. As of 2024, Project Rebound operates on 19 CSU campuses and serves as a national model for advancing educational access and equity.
Stanislaus State established its Project Rebound program in 2019 under the leadership of Danica Bravo, who served as Program Coordinator from 2019 through 2024. Missy Lebray currently serves as the Program Coordinator.
Since its launch at Stanislaus State, Project Rebound has supported students whose educational pathways are shaped by systemic barriers, reentry challenges, and complex life responsibilities. Through intentional non-clinical case management, targeted financial assistance, and a strong emphasis on community and belonging, the program increases access to higher education for individuals impacted by the criminal justice system while enriching the campus community through the contributions of its scholars.
