Stanislaus State biology major Joseph Hobbie was meeting an elective requirement when he signed up for the Zoology 4640 course, Mammalogy, taught every other spring. But he and his classmates ended up experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime event. On a whale watching trip to Monterey Bay, the class had the rare opportunity to see a pod of five orcas. Only two percent of those who go whale watching ever see orcas.
Professor Emeritus of Vertebrate Ecology/Conservation Biology, Patrick Kelly created the field trips to enhance student learning. "When you can take students away from the classroom and take them out of that comfortable environment into something that is completely different, in this case four field trips, they're going to come away with a lasting impression."
Stanislaus State students Heather Collins, Cristian Silva-Toro, Jordan Prather and Kyle Leethe represented Stanislaus State and gained invaluable experience at this year's California State University (CSU) Student Research Competition. This year's event had a total of 250 presenters with more than 200 presentations from across the 23 campuses in the CSU.
"It's always a rewarding experience to watch our students share their research, and especially so at an event like this," said Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (OSRP) Director Joyce Bell. "It's inspiring to watch our students deliver their presentations at such a large event, and to see them so confident and prepared."
Sarah Sweitzer has been appointed dean of the Stanislaus State Stockton Campus, effective July 6, 2023.
