Applicants are encouraged to read the FAQs as they provide pertinent information concerning eligibility criteria, important dates and deadlines, and format guidelines.

Applications and all subsequent materials are usually due within the first month of Spring semester. An announcement will be sent to current graduate students.

Teaching Associates

Any English graduate student in good academic standing. Priority is given to students who have passed ENGL 5894, worked in the Writing Center, and taught less than two semesters.

Teaching Associates are hired on a yearly basis and should provide availability and course preferences for the entire academic year in which they are applying.

  1. Transcripts (Unofficial copies are sufficient for application; however, if you are recommended for a position, you will need to provide official copies to Faculty Affairs.)
  2. Curriculum Vitae (please list 3 references)
  3. One-page teaching philosophy related to teaching first-year composition
  4. A syllabus for ENGL 1001, a prompt for a major assignment, and a class schedule showing how the assignment will be taught from its introduction to completion. These materials should correlate to the course learning objectives for English 1001 found on the Writing Program webpage.

Most new and returning teaching associates will teach only one course per semester. Occasionally because of a high volume of courses or a shortage of applicants, experienced associates may be asked to teach two courses. TAs are eligible to teach ENGL 1001 and on rare occasion 1006/1007.

Teaching Associates: If the application requirements listed above have not yet been met, but students would still like the opportunity to gain experience in the field of composition, they can apply to be a tutor in the writing center. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for hire, and employees will gain excellent knowledge, skills, and methods that can benefit them in the future when applying to be a Teaching Associate.
