The Design and Construction division oversees the design and construction phases for building projects.

Fusion 360 is a cloud-based computer aided design software that allows users to design their own precisely measured 3D models through parametric modeling. Using a combination of sketches, parameters, constraints, and extrusions, Fusion 360 assists its users in building mechanically viable models from prototyping to finished products.

Every year, Modesto Sister Cities International hosts a civic delegation from Ukraine as part of the Open World program managed by the Congressional Office of International Leadership, COIL. This year we are hosting five mayors from Ukraine who will speak to the strategic challenges of building out sustainable energy sources and critical infrastructure while fighting off Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine. The mayors will talk about the current circumstances in Ukraine with a special focus on the impact of the war on civilian populations and the public institutions that sustain them.

Canvas is the Fab Lab’s learning management system (LMS) for equipment and software information and for user training. All users must complete the canvas modules relevant to the equipment they want to use, in addition to the general safety module, before they can begin working on that equipment.

Minecraft Education Edition is a clever use of the classic game software that allows for Minecraft worlds and builds to be converted into 3D object files that users can print. Using the Structure Block in Minecraft, users can create a structure in their Minecraft world, define the area of the build in the Structure Block parameters, and export the area of the Structure Block as a 3D GLB file. This file can be processed and converted into STLs or OBJs that can be run through slicing software and ultimately 3D printed.

The Fab Lab is equipped with a multitude of 3D scanners, both desktop and handheld. Each accomplish the same function; when provided with a real-world object that the user wants to make a 3D model of, the scanner is used to encircle the object, taking a series of pictures that are composited to produce a 3D model replica. Different scanners accomplish this task in different ways, often incorporating lidar, and using a shifting pattern of light columns to define the shape of the object based on the pattern’s distortion.

Slicing is the term for preparing an object to 3D print and it is the core software for most of the 3D printing in the Fab Lab.
