SMART Scholarships for Future Math and Science Teachers

There is currently a high demand for math and science teachers in California and throughout the nation. California State University, Stanislaus is addressing this need and is committed to providing teacher candidates the necessary tools for entering the workplace as highly-qualified math and science teachers.

The Robert Noyce SMART Scholarship Program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), provides scholarship opportunities for math and science majors and degree holders to support them in completing a Secondary (Single Subject) Teaching Credential. Scholarship recipients Science Math Access Research and Teaching (SMART Scholars) will benefit from a cohort support system, enhanced learning and professional development opportunities, and one-on-one mentoring from Stan State Math and Science Faculty.

Math and science majors who have attained Junior level status, career changers/returning students who have been admitted into the Single Subject Credential Program are eligible to apply.

The Robert Noyce SMART Scholarship Program will award annual scholarships in the amount of $10,000 in exchange for teaching service upon completion of a credential. Junior level scholarship recipients who maintain eligibility and fulfill program requirements will be eligible to receive a $10,000 scholarship annually for a maximum of 3 years, in exchange for a 2-year teaching service commitment in a high-need school for each $10,000 award received. Scholarships will be awarded each academic year and can be received by a recipient for a maximum of three years, as shown in the following table.

Undergraduate Scholarship Recipients

Year Scholarship Amount Total Scholarship Amount Teaching Commitment
Year 1 (Junior) $10,000 $10,000 2 Years
Year 2 (Senior) $10,000 $20,000 4 Years

Degree Holder/Single Subject Credential Program Recipients

The Robert Noyce SMART Scholarship is, in essence, a forgivable loan, which will covert to a student loan should the SMART Scholar fail to fulfill the teaching service agreement (two years for every $10,000 award received).
