Application to Stan State Ed.D. Program

Students are admitted to the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership once annually during the Summer Term. Admission is based on a comprehensive review process and is highly competitive. Applications submitted after the priority deadline will be considered on a space-available basis. Typically, a cohort of 12 to 15 students will be admitted each year. Applicants who advance to semi-finalist status will be invited for an interview with the admissions committee.

Prerequisites for Admission

  1. Earned master’s and baccalaureate degrees from accredited institutions of higher education. 
  2. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in completed graduate courses. 
  3. Good standing at the last institution of higher education attended. 
  4. Evidence of sufficient preparation for, experiences in, and potential for educational leadership, including:  
    • Successful experience (minimum three years) in school, postsecondary, community, and/or policy leadership. 
    • Demonstrated academic excellence. 
    • Strong problem-solving abilities. 
    • Effective oral and written communication skills. 
    • Proficiency in technology. 
    • A genuine interest in assessing and improving educational policies and practices. 

Application Requirements

  • University Application: Complete the university application available online at Cal State Edu
  • Official Transcripts: Submit copies of all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts; Stanislaus State graduates need not submit their Stanislaus transcripts. 
  • Program Application: Apply to the Stanislaus State Graduate School and submit a separate application to the Doctorate Program in Educational Leadership to the program office. 
  • Recommendation Letters: Provide three confidential letters of recommendation from academic and professional references attesting to your leadership abilities and scholarship. 
  • Supporting Statement: Include either a statement of support from your employer for your participation in the program or a personal statement outlining how you will balance professional responsibilities with program demands. 
  • Resume: Provide a detailed professional resume that includes your academic degrees, professional experience, and accomplishments. 
  • Interview: Participate in a personal interview if selected as a semi-finalist. 
  • Problem of Practice Statement: Submit a typed, double-spaced essay (1,000-word limit) describing an educational problem you wish to examine. Feel free to attend one of our info sessions to learn how to develop your Problem of Practice Statement. The essay should address: 
    • The problem of practice you want to explore. 
    • Your passion for this issue. 
    • How your personal story and talents relate to addressing this problem. 
    • Why studying this problem would be enjoyable. 

Exceptional Policies

  1. Admission: A limited number of students may be admitted conditionally on an exceptional basis. The number of exceptional admissions shall not exceed 15 percent of those regularly admitted to the program.
  2. Transfer Credit: A maximum of 6 units of comparable courses completed at the postmaster/doctoral level may be granted. The coursework, taken while matriculated in a graduate program (normally a doctoral program), must not be more than 7 years old at the time the doctoral program is completed. Open University, extension, and coursework credits earned through examination or at non-regionally accredited institutions shall not be accepted.

Problem of Practice Workshop

We are committed to support your journey into our program. To assist you in developing an effective problem of practice statement, we will host two 60-minute workshops designed to provide insights on fulfilling this requirement. During these workshops, we will learn about your interests and share our approach to identify a problem of practice that is original, relevant, and engaging. Please register in advance and come prepared to share your ideas. We look forward to helping you succeed!
