Read&Write by Everway
Students, faculty, and staff at Stanislaus State have access to an incredibly useful study tool software, Read&Write. Read&Write is a literacy program that offers a plethora of tools designed to aid students with both reading comprehension and writing skills. This program is easy to install, simple to use, and completely free!
Read&Write is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems, and has plugins/extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
Read&Write's features include:
- Read PDFs, Word documents, and the web out loud
- Create MP3s and listen to your documents on the go
- Collect highlighted text to create an instant reference sheet
- Dictation
- Dictionary
- Word prediction
- Spelling and grammar check

Downloading and Installing Read&Write
- Follow this link to the Read&Write download page: Read&Write for Windows. Select the pink “Try Read&Write” icon to open a dropdown menu, then select "Windows (US EN)." This will start the download.
- After the installation file is downloaded, run the downloaded file.
- The program will begin to extract files. When it is finished extracting, it will prompt you to accept the terms and conditions. When you are ready to continue, click "Accept and Install."

After the installation is complete, run the Read&Write program (its logo is a purple puzzle piece)

A tab at the top of your screen will indicate that Read&Write is running; click the purple puzzle piece to login.

Select "Sign in with Microsoft," then enter your csustan.edu email address. This will prompt you to log into your campus account. After this, the Read&Write toolbar will appear at the top of your screen, ready to use!

1. Follow this link to the Read&Write download page: Read&Write for Mac. Click the pink button that says ‘Try Read&Write’.
2: A pop-up window will ask to allow downloads from Everway. Click "allow" to continue the download process.
3: Next, a dialog box will ask you to read and accept the Read&Write EULA, User Terms, and Privacy Policy. Once you have finished reading these, click "agree" to continue the installation process.
4: Read&Write will start opening its files. When this finishes, a box will pop-up showing the Read&Write program icon and a folder titled "Applications’. Drag and drop the Read&Write icon into the applications folder (this will allow Read&Write to be in the same location as all your other programs).
Note: Some devices may ask if you truly want to open Read&Write, due to it being downloaded from the Internet. Click ‘Open’ to continue the set-up process.
5: Read&Write will now appear as a small tab at the top of your screen. Click the tab to expand and show every icon.
6: If this does not automatically open a sign-in browser, click the portrait icon at the top right corner of the Read&Write bar to open another browser window for signing in.
Select "Sign in With Microsoft" and sign in using your full CSU Stan email address, complete with “@csustan.edu”.
7: Next, you will be greeted with a pop-up about Read&Write’s requested permissions. Please read through these and click ‘accept’ when finished.
8: Once you have finished signing in, you are ready to use Read&Write!
Notes:
When you start using Read&Write, it may ask for permission to access features of your device in order to use specific tools. Follow the steps indicated by Read&Write to allow access as needed.
Read&Write may also ask you if you want to allow an installation of the Read&Write browser extension. Select ‘Enable Now’ if you wish to add the browser extension.
Additional Note: Read&Write for Mac may not successfully sign-in on your first attempt. If this happens, try repeating the sign-in process.

- Follow this link to the Read&Write download page: Try Read&Write. Select the pink “Try Read&Write” icon to open a dropdown menu, then select "Google Chrome."
- This will open a new tab to the Chrome Web Store listing for “Read&Write for Google Chrome”. Click the button that says ‘Add to Chrome’.
- A pop-up box will ask you if you want to add Read&Write to Google Chrome, and list the permissions the extension requires. Read these and click ‘add extension’ when you are finished.
- Click the puzzle piece icon in the upper-left corner of the Chrome browser to view your extensions. Click the pin button next to the Read&Write extension to pin Read&Write to the toolbar banner.
- Open your Canvas page, then click the Read&Write extension icon. This will cause a tab to appear on your Canvas page.
- Click the purple puzzle piece icon on the tab. This will prompt you to log into Read&Write for Chrome.
- Once you're logged in, the toolbar will appear on your Canvas. You are now ready to use Read&Write for Chrome!
Note: The Read&Write Chrome extension can work for other websites as well, not just Canvas.
