The Maddy Legislative Internship Programs provide students with the opportunity to intern in a legislative office to gain practical knowledge of the day-to-day operations of government and political process. Maddy Legislative Interns learn and support regional legislative offices in the San Joaquin Valley each semester as well as Sacramento, and Washington, D.C. over the summer. The Maddy Institute has provided over 450 legislative intern scholarships to students from throughout the San Joaquin Valley.

Legislative Scholar-Interns receive academic credit as well as a scholarship and are selected based on their academic standing and leadership potential.

Eligibility

  • Must have a 3.0 overall GPA or higher
  • Must be at least a Junior in standing (60 units completed) if enrolled at a University OR be a second-year student if enrolled at a Community College OR be a Graduate student in standing during the semester of the internship.
  • Must be able to work 10-15 hours a week during the semester (hour requirement is 150 hours minimum) for local placements OR 8-10 weeks full time for summer Sacramento/Washington, D.C. placements.

Application Requirements

  • Completed Application: All sections must be completed and signed.
  • Resume: Must be current and completed.
  • Personal Statement: No longer than ONE page with your name on the document. Write a short
    biographical sketch. Explain how a legislative office would benefit from having you in the office. What
    interest, experience, or background do you have in public policy or government affairs (school, work,
    volunteerism, etc.)? When and how have you exhibited leadership? What is your long-term commitment
    to making the Valley a better place? How do you plan to do it?
  • College Transcripts: Copies (PDF file) of unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Your name must appear on the document. Official transcripts indicating the expected graduation date and degree may be required if offered a placement. (Stan State students: Request transcripts from Enrollment Services)

The Maddy Institute

The Maddy Institute was established to engage, prepare and inspire the next generation of government leaders and civil servants. Activities primarily focus on Citizen Participation, Policy Analysis and Leadership Training. Leadership Training programs consist primarily of an extensive government intern program for college students throughout the Valley, as well as the Wonderful Public Service Graduate Fellowship.
