Frequently Asked Questions
CPDC offers a wide range of assistance from when students begin their career at Stan State to their transition to alumni of Stan. We offer resume/cover letter guidance, interview success/tips, warrior wardrobe, major/career exploration and events/workshops to assist students and alumni in their transition from college to career. Coaches are available to current students and to alumni*.
*Due to limited availability of staff and increased requests for services, priority for appointments will go to recent students and recent graduates (up to two years after graduation). Alumni past the two year graduation timeline can still meet with a career coach, we would just need to consider availability. Peak times, around job fair season, will potentially cause a delay in appointment availability.
Log on to your MyStanState student center and use the single sign-on by finding HireStanState. Once you have located it, sign in to your portal. From the landing page on HireStanState, also known as Handshake, you will click on "Career Center" which will take you to the Appointments option.
*Peak times, around job fair season, will potentially cause a delay in appointment availability.
No worries! CPDC understands students also have other things going on. Simply cancel the appointment or email career@csustan.edu and we can go ahead and cancel it for you. You may reschedule to an appropriate time that works best for you or drop in during our walk-in hours.
To receive faster responses, please email career@csustan.edu or DM our social media @stanstatecareer on Instagram. You may also leave a voicemail at (209) 667-3661 and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
Yes, our walk-in hours are Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. in Suite 205 in the Student Center.
Yes. If you are unsure about what major you are leaning towards, you may use the FOCUS2 resource, a self-assessment that allows you to see what majors align with your responses to the assessments. The assessments ask you questions that focus on four main areas: Personality, Interests, Skills, and Values. Once you answer the prompts, the system will generate a list of related occupations that you might find align with your responses. It will also share which majors on campus can align with those occupations. There is also a Career Readiness assessment that can give you suggestions on how to improve on areas that you may feel are needing some support.
Once you have your results, which will be automatic, you can review those yourself and/or with a career coach. If you have a mentor that you trust and would like to have a conversation with, you are welcome to do that. The results are yours and will be accessible as long as you are a registered student.
*We suggest downloading information that you want to preserve before you graduate as this platform is only accessible to currently registered students.
You must use your Stan State email address to create an account, as well as the access code which is: warriors
If you are looking for an on-campus job for the next semester visit the Current Students page and scroll down until you see Student Employment. If you are planning to work on-campus WITH work study, contact Financial Aid at Financial_Aid@csustan.edu. If you are planning to work on-campus WITHOUT work study, you can find those jobs on csustan.edu/hr, in the Student Opportunities section. Our coaches can help by reviewing your resume, helping you prepare for an interview, or addressing questions about the application process.
If you plan to work off-campus, please visit csustan.edu/hirestanstate to see listed jobs off campus. We do manage this job board, but not the on-campus jobs board.
Log onto your student center and use the single sign on, find Handshake. Once you have located it, click on that and go ahead and schedule an appointment from there.
Take advantage of your time as a student to gather information and expose yourself to different industries and careers. Connect with students in your classes to learn about their interests, connect with alumni to gain insight on their transition from college to career and connect with your faculty! Go to office hours to check in every now and then and show that you are interested in learning about them and about your major.
Informational interviews are a great use of your time to expand your career-readiness. These can be done virtually or in-person. It would also be a good time to create your LinkedIN profile and add connections. Check in with a career coach to talk about Informational Interviewing or check out our "Explore" section to learn more.
Yes, of course! Learning and engagement opportunities abound on and off campus. We recommend reviewing the opportunities listed in the Events section of HireStanState (aka Handshake). Many organizations often list their own information sessions that highlight elements of professionalism that they seek in candidates. Some also post their own job fairs or educational workshops that are open to our students and alumni in a virtual platform. We also recommend engaging in on-campus opportunities provided through a variety of Student Affairs departments (https://www.csustan.edu/student-affairs/division-directory)
Also, be sure to check with your departments as they may also host opportunities for students to engage in career development like connecting with alumni or hosting events on campus for the community. All of these experiences can help you explore your interests and build your networks while you build your resume.
Career Coaches can assist in identifying area-specific employers and job opportunities. By scheduling an appointment or attending the walk-in hours, career coaches can assist in reviewing effective job search strategies so that you can be confident in the process to identify jobs that are of interest.
Using Focus 2, mentioned avoce, can also help if you're looking for some occupation titles specifically.
