John and June Rogers have been longstanding partners with CSU Stanislaus, and this year they are lending their leadership to the launch of One Purpose as chairs for the six-week fund drive.
Local entrepreneurs Matt and Maria Swanson have made a $250,000 seed gift to establish the One Purpose endowment at California State University, Stanislaus. The endowment will support the One Purpose annual fund drive, a new effort aiming to raise $1 million for scholarships for high-achieving students during a six-week period in the fall.
Jerry Zeng is a third-year finance student with an infectious smile and — for a native of China making his first visit to the United States — a strong grasp of the English language. That smile was in abundance this week as Zeng discussed his observations of life in America.
“It’s awesome,” he said. “We always make everything so serious in our country. Having fun is important.”
The California State University, Stanislaus chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has been recognized by its national governing body as a Chapter of Excellence, the highest commendation a chapter can receive from the organization.
The award, given this year to only 29 of the more than 300 chapters nationwide, honors the chapters that excel in recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engaging the community of scholars in service to others.
Kilolo Brodie, an associate professor in the Master of Social Work program, was recently appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. to serve on Area Board VI of the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD). The SCDD works to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities receive the services and support they need.
California State University, Stanislaus honored more than 2,500 graduating students during three commencement ceremonies over the past two days, highlighting the impact the university has on the region’s students and the impact of its graduates on the region.
A pair of morning ceremonies on Thursday and Friday each recognized more than 950 students receiving undergraduate degrees, while an additional 600 students eligible for graduate degrees — including doctoral and master’s degrees, as well as teaching credentials — took part in a Thursday evening ceremony.

Linda Nowak, Dean of the CSU Stanislaus College of Business Administration, will retire in June following four years of academic success and community enrichment.
Nowak said she will return to Santa Rosa to be closer to her family and to return to teaching and her research in wine business marketing and strategy. Professor David Lindsay, chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance, will serve as interim dean until a permanent replacement is hired.
The San Joaquin Valley economy continues to trend upward following the Great Recession that began in 2008 — with employment reaching an all-time high in the third quarter of 2013 and the economy expected to exceed pre-recession levels by 2016 — according to a report by Gökçe Soydemir, the Foster Farms Endowed Professor of Business Economics at California State University, Stanislaus.
