Graduate Teaching Fellowships

The Master of Science in Biological Sciences is pleased to offer Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTFs) to eligible students enrolled in, or applying to the program.  The GTF is intended to financially support graduate students, for up to a total of four semesters, via both salary and tuition assistance.  Eligible applicants will be employed as Teaching Associates (TAs) and will provide instruction to undergraduate students enrolled in a subset of lab course sections offered by the department.  In addition to a stipend paid for teaching, the GTF award will also include tuition coverage by the program* for those teaching at least two course sections.

  **Includes unit costs only, other student fees apply.  Subject to available funds.

Eligibility

  • All students that have been accepted into the program are eligible. 
  • Students must remain in good standing with respect to both course GPA and thesis project progress as assessed by their supervisor.
  • Tuition assistance is offered for a maximum of four semesters.
  • GTF recipients may teach more than four terms without the tuition assistance based on department needs and availability but will not receive priority in course assignments.

Application Process

  • Students that apply to the program should also fill out the GTF application (below).  These are due by the program application deadline , April 1st.
  • In addition to the GTF application, all prospective candidates must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA; Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
    • Any Federal aid available (excluding loans) will be used to subsidize tuition in lieu of the GTF tuition assistance.
  • Applications will be considered by the program director and department graduate committee, and awardees will be notified by the program director. 
  • The program director will forward the eligible applications to the Department Chair for teaching assignment.
  • Continuing students will be expected to submit a semester progress report signed by their supervisor for the remaining three terms in which they expect to receive GTF assistance and a teaching position in the department.
