UnderSTANding Our Community

Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to join our Fall 2026 UnderSTANding Our Community workshop series. Through two interactive sessions, participants will explore the history, impact and lived realities of anti-Blackness in higher education and within our Central Valley communities. Engage in meaningful dialogue, learn practical strategies for fostering inclusion and belonging, and deepen your understanding of how we can create a more equitable campus environment.

Certificate of Completion: Participants who attend both workshops will receive a Certificate of Completion recognizing their commitment to fostering inclusive excellence, belonging, and community engagement at Stan State and beyond.

Buying a Parking Permit

  • Daily permits are available near campus entrances; the cost is $6 per day (see campus map).
  • Hourly permits can be purchased for $2/hour in Lot 1, near the Library (around University Circle).
  • 2-hour permits are available in parking Lot 8 at a reduced rate.
  • Parking permits are NOT required if you park on the city streets along the campus perimeter.

UnderSTANding Our Community: Understanding & Uprooting Anti-Blackness on College Campuses Workshop, Part 1

This workshop examines how anti-Blackness has shaped the experiences of Black students, faculty, and staff within higher education. Participants will explore historical and contemporary examples, identify barriers to belonging and success and discuss practical strategies for creating more inclusive campus communities where all members can thrive. 

Dr. Tyrone C. Howard is a Professor of Education at UCLA and one of the nation's foremost scholars on race, equity and educational opportunities. His work examines the impact of race and culture on student success and has influenced educational policy and practice across the country. Dr. Howard is the founder of UCLA's Black Male Institute, an acclaimed author and a nationally sought-after speaker on issues of diversity, belonging and educational justice.

UnderSTANding Our Community: Anti-Blackness in the Central Valley Workshop, Part 2

Building on themes from Part 1, this session focuses on how anti-Blackness manifests within the Central Valley's social, educational and community contexts. Participants will examine local realities, engage in reflective discussion and identify opportunities to strengthen equity, inclusion, and cross-community understanding throughout the region. 

Dr. Mary Roaf is an Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at California State University, Stanislaus whose teaching, research, and community engagement focus on racial justice, educational equity and social change. A Fulbright Scholar and award-winning educator, her work explores the intersections of race, class and gender while advancing belonging and equity in both educational and community settings.
