Revised Course Learning Outcomes

For a course to be designated as fulfilling this requirement, it must be a minimum of 3 units and satisfy at least 2 of the following three Learning Outcomes. By the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Discuss historical and/or contemporary experiences of historically disenfranchised or marginalized populations within the US and/or abroad.
  • Interpret how power, structures, privilege, oppression, agency, and/or resistance shape histories, lives, places, and/or cultures in a regional, national, and/or global context.
  • Examine their own place within intersectional systems and structures of power, privilege, oppression, and/or resistance.

2025-2026 Sociocultural Inquiry Certification

Beginning Fall 2025, all courses previously designated as Multicultural will be required to undergo a certification process if academic programs wish to have these courses count towards the new Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement (SIR). This certification process needs to be initiated by academic programs in order for SIR courses to be included in the 2025-26 Catalog and offered beginning in Fall 2025.

There are two options for certification:

  1. Department Batch Approval: This streamlined option is available in Curriculog for courses that require no additional changes or only need to add a couple of learning outcomes. The department will need to provide a pre-formatted spreadsheet and all syllabi for courses seeking certification. The Curriculog form title is: *2024-25 Sociocultural Inquiry Requirement Certification.
  2. Individual Course Review: For courses that require more extensive changes, faculty can complete the course modification form and directly select the SIR questions. The Curriculog form title is: *2024-25 Course (Modification).

The deadline for courses seeking certification has been extended to Monday, October 28th.
