Description

We all know that course redesign is a challenging, lengthy process that requires abundant support and resources. Through the combination of two funding sources, we are excited to be offering a new faculty learning community (FLC) for STEM faculty who are ready to take a long-term, scaffolded approach to revising their curriculum and pedagogy towards equity-mindedness. This program will take place over a year and a half and will provide the guided support and collaboration that is needed for faculty to embrace and enact teaching practices that meet the unique needs of Stan State students.

FLC Compensation

Faculty participants will be compensated with a $3,000 stipend for successfully completing the first two semesters (F23, Sp24) of the FLC, and will receive 3 WTU of reassigned time in F24 to support the course redesign and implementation.

  • In Fall 2023, the FLC meets weekly, synchronously with STEM faculty from 3 other CSUs: San José, Sonoma, and Humboldt. Over ten (10) 2-hour sessions on Tuesday afternoons (starting on 9/19), we will collectively learn and discuss challenging topics such as identity, stereotype threat, and racism/anti-racism in STEM in order to enhance our self-awareness, empathy, and understanding of ESJAR issues. Additionally, we will examine research-tested approaches for building equity into our courses, and develop individualized implementation plans for a Spring 24 course.
  • In Spring 2024, the FLC will meet every other week with STEM faculty from 3 other CSUs: San José, Sonoma, and Humboldt, to provide support as faculty experiment with new teaching practices through guided reflection, observation, feedback, and assessment.
  • In Summer 2024, Stan State faculty will build off of efforts and learning in spring by taking part in a one-week intensive course redesign institute to facilitate curricular and pedagogical changes in one course.
  • In Fall 2024, faculty will implement their redesigned course, and be supported through a variety of feedback and data collection practices to demonstrate student engagement and success.

Faculty who successfully complete the FLC will be able to:

  • Grow as equity-minded educators who design with intention, teach with care, and learn and grow from critical reflection.
  • Teach classes in which students’ personal histories and identities do not predict success.

Participants must:

  • Be any Stan State faculty (T/TT, FTL, part-time instructors) who anticipate teaching in the spring of 2024 in a core STEM program: biology, chemistry, computer science, math, physics, and geology. (Unfortunately, funding sources limit participants to these disciplines.)
  • Be available to attend and actively engage in at least 80% of the synchronous online meetings.
  • New faculty, including faculty who are starting in the spring of 2024, are encouraged to apply.

FLC Application & Meeting Schedule

  • Those interested in joining the FLC must complete the application before September 1, 2023.
  • Fall 2023 FLC activities will take place on Tuesday afternoons (between 1 and 5), with the exact timing based on accommodating the greatest number of participants. On the application, you will list available times on Tuesday afternoons, to attend the synchronous online FLC meetings. We anticipate the first meeting to be held on September 19th.
  • Activities in Spring 2024 and beyond will be scheduled to accommodate all participants.
  • There are 7 spaces in the FLC. Should more than 7 faculty apply to participate, priority will go to those who teach undergraduate courses that serve as gateways for academic success and who are able to meet at a common time.
