Lesley Cantu is not afraid to dive into something new.

Whether it’s walking up to strangers to conduct interviews or asking them to be a part of a TikTok video for the University’s Strategic Communications and Marketing (MarCom) efforts or interrupting her pursuit of a college degree to seize an opportunity to handle marketing for a minor-league baseball team, Cantu doesn’t hesitate.

All of those experiences have guided her toward a position with E. & J. Gallo Winery as a part of its Marketing Leadership Rotational Program. Cantu also plans to pursue a master’s degree in marketing, although she has already built an impressive resume as an undergraduate student.

A graduate of Patterson High, Cantu had spent many summers working for the promotions team of the Modesto Nuts, a Class A baseball team. After two years at Stan State, she was offered the opportunity to work full-time as the team’s Community Relations Director, which included marketing. Cantu paused the pursuit of her degree for what she considered a dream job with the affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

“My parents were my biggest supporters in my decision,” Cantu said. “My dad said, ‘If this is something you want to do in your life, go for it! What an amazing opportunity to get your foot in the door.’

“It was a scary step to take a break from my academics to focus on my career, but looking back at it now, it was worth it. I got hands-on experience that will help me in the future, opened the door for future career opportunities and helped me gain clarity on what I really want to do in my life. I also got a championship ring out of it, because the team won the California League championship while I was there.”

Returning to Stan State was always her intention, but doing so was a bit unnerving.

“I was so intimidated, thinking that maybe I made the wrong choice, but I soon realized coming back to school helped me stay focused on what I really wanted,” Cantu said. “Everyone was so welcoming and helpful. My nerves calmed after seeing the support I was getting, and from then on, I knew I’d made the right decision. I had more motivation than ever to start my career with a degree to back it up.”

Cantu began working in the MarCom Office and was invaluable to the department, connecting with students and creating extended videos for newsletters as well as social media, including TikTok posts.

“Lesley stands out for her creativity, dedication and drive,” said MarCom’s Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy Mandeep Khaira. “As our social media student assistant since fall 2023, she has executed great ideas and brought fresh, creative thinking that has given our platforms an edge.

“Her motivation and hard work have made a lasting impact on our office. It’s no surprise that she has already secured a job at Gallo, where she will continue to grow in her field. Lesley’s journey is an inspiring example for current and future Warriors, showing the power of passion, initiative and hands-on experience.”

Her experiences leave her with an unwavering commitment to the University.

“I want to give back as much as I can, whether it’s with my time or helping to push initiatives,” Cantu said. “I want to see the University that helped me grow, flourish.”

What memories stand out most from your time at Stanislaus State?

“My time in Strategic Communications and Marketing gave me the best memories. I created content for holidays, conducted student interviews or filmed events around campus, engaged with students and heard their stories or did silly TikToks with coworkers. Having the opportunity to be in photoshoots and commercials was something that I never imagined doing. My amazing coworkers and team made me love coming into work. I loved hosting the Taking Care of U podcast on campus and meeting all the guests who shared their stories and resources. Doing TikToks with President Britt Rios-Ellis made me laugh so much, I would forget I was working. I have the most loving memories of Stan State, and I will forever hold them in my heart, so dearly.”

Which faculty or staff member had the greatest impact on you, and why?

“I’ve had so many faculty and staff members that have helped guide me in my journey here at Stan State. Director of Communications and Creative Services Kristina Stamper, Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy Mandy Khaira and my team helped me so much when I returned back to school. They gave me advice and resources and guided me. They made work not feel like I was working and helped me take steps forward professionally and personally. Professor Veronica Dawson helped me secure a post-grad job. She encouraged me to apply for a position I wasn’t sure I was qualified for. Her guidance and faith in me gave me the confidence to continue through the application. She was one of my biggest cheerleaders every step of the interview process and rejoiced with me when I was accepted. Because of her, I have a plan after graduation. I cannot be more thankful.”

What advice would you give to current and future students?

“Don’t be discouraged or feel like you’re falling behind. Everyone has their own path. Being in college is such an amazing privilege, but it can come with some obstacles. Just because your journey is different from others does not minimize the success you have. There are so many wonderful resources and amazing faculty and staff members who are ready to help you along the way. You’re here and you belong.”
