Debora Haro

When Debora Haro stepped onto the Stanislaus State campus, she was looking for community and a place to grow academically — she found numerous opportunities for both and has grown into a leader in and out of the classroom, according to her mentors.

Originally from Ceres and a graduate of Whitmore Charter High School, Haro chose Stan State after watching her older sister earn a bachelor’s degree from the University. She also wanted to attend a university close to home.

“What stood out to me most about Stan State was its strong academic environment and close-knit community,” Haro said.

As a first-generation college student majoring in criminal justice with a concentration in law enforcement, Haro found one of her most meaningful experiences through the Faculty Mentor Program (FMP). Her experiences with FMP connected her with faculty mentors who helped shape her academic journey and reinforced her commitment to her goals.

“I gained valuable mentorships with professors who continuously encouraged and supported me throughout my academic journey,” Haro said.

Haro credits Criminal Justice Lecturer Giancarlo Panagia with making the greatest impact on her Stan State experience.

“He has helped me tremendously in growing as both a student and a scholar,” Haro said. “I am grateful for his mentorship, guidance and his continued belief in my potential.”

Panagia said her growth over the past two years has been remarkable.

“Debora has become a leader in the classroom and program,” Panagia said. “Her agency and self-confidence have increased exponentially under the mentoring of the FMP program.”

Haro said Stan State’s welcoming environment helped her feel seen, valued and supported. Each experience strengthened her determination to seek out opportunities and continue moving toward her goals.

One of the most powerful lessons she learned was that education carries a responsibility to serve others, and she plans to put her bachelor’s degree into action close to home.

“I aspire to have a career in public service in the area of law enforcement as a detective,” Haro said. “I plan to use my education to help those within my community, specifically Stanislaus County, maintain safety and serve justice.”
