California State University, Stanislaus students won the lion’s share of scholarships at the 2009 Society for Human Resource Management conference in New Orleans. It is the second straight year that CSU Stanislaus students have won the scholarships which have provided for invaluable internship experiences at Foster Farms and the City of Modesto.

Named winners of three of the 20 National Society for Human Resource Management Internship Scholarships worth $5,000 each were CSU Stanislaus Human Resources Management students Crystal Gutierrez of Turlock, Tabitha Lilly of Victorville, and Demetrios Zarefakis of Lodi. The scholarships provide funding to pay for summer internships at a company or public agency in the University region, according to Dr. Edward Hernandez, Professor of Management, Operations & Marketing and coordinator of the Human Resources Management program.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment by these students who have been identified with the highest potential for success within the field of Human Resources,” said Dr. Herman D. Lujan, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “CSU Stanislaus has claimed more of these scholarships than any other university in the country.”

Lilly and Zarefakis also won the scholarship in 2008 and performed internships at Foster Farms corporate offices where they took on special projects and production assignments. This year’s three CSU Stanislaus scholarship winners are doing summer internships with the City of Modesto’s Human Resources Department.

“They are working out fantastically, and have stepped up to the challenge of taking on a variety of tasks,” said Modesto Human Resources Department Analyst Kimberly Murdaugh. “It’s easy to see why they are national award winners because they have demonstrated that they are very well prepared to do the work.”

Lilly and Zarefakis were on the CSU Stanislaus student team that went undefeated in winning the Pacific Western Regional Human Resource Games Championships and a co-national title during the April 2009 competition at Boise State University in Idaho. CSU Stanislaus Human Resource Management teams have won a pair of national titles, four Western Regional championships, and three state crowns. Gutierrez will serve as CSU Stanislaus Society for Human Resources Management Club President in 2009-10, succeeding Lilly who was the Club’s 2008-09 leader. The Club received the 2008-09 Superior Merit Award from the National Society for Human Resource Management earlier this year, its third straight attainment of that prestigious honor.
