CSU Stanislaus Provost James T. Strong recently announced the recipients of the Outstanding Professor Awards for the 2010/11 academic year.

Outstanding Professor: Dr. Mary Borba
Outstanding Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Professor: Dr. Samuel Regalado
Outstanding Community Service Professor: Dr. Jennifer Helzer
Outstanding Service in Faculty Governance: Ms. Renae Floyd

Outstanding Professor: Dr. Mary Borba
Mary Borba, Associate Professor of Literacy, has been selected as the Outstanding Professor. She has an impressive record of experience including teaching at many different grade levels, a reading recovery teacher, a school administrator, and currently a professor at CSU Stanislaus for the last five years. All this experience has laid a concrete foundation for her success at the University. However, her extensive knowledge and background are only a part of this success. As one of her colleagues stated, “Dr. Borba is a stellar teacher, effective manager, inspirational mentor and role model, a supportive and dependable colleague, a productive and highly visible scholar, an outstanding college citizen, and an important presence in her professional field.” Her many letters of support from students and colleagues attest to the exceptional attributes in teaching excellence which she brings to the Department of Teacher Education and to the University.

Outstanding Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Professor: Dr. Samuel Regalado
Samuel Regalado, Professor of History, has been selected as the Outstanding Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Professor. Dr. Regalado has distinguished himself as a leading scholar locally, nationally and internationally in the area of U.S. sports history through his extensive research and publications focusing on “the interrelations among baseball, race, ethnicity, and law in 20th-century American society.” In particular he has focused his work on Mexican American and Japanese American experiences in the U.S. national pastime of baseball. Among his extensive publications is “Viva Baseball” which received several awards and is noted as a milestone in the area of Latin American baseball players. Dr. Regalado is lauded and respected by his colleagues and peers, and he has elevated the image of the University by the spotlight he has created through his valuable contributions and achievements in research, scholarship and creative activity.

Outstanding Community Service Professor: Dr. Jennifer Helzer
Dr. Jennifer Helzer, Associate Professor of Geography, has been selected as the Outstanding Community Service Professor. Dr. Helzer has a proven track record of outstanding community service through her involvement in a number of service projects such as the Turlock Farmer’s Market Working Group, The BRIDGE, Airport Neighbors United, Habitat for Humanity, the Turlock Downtown Business Association, Turlock Together, and the World Relief Organization. She has developed innovative campus and community partnerships that provide active learning and research opportunities for our students. As one of her students stated regarding the Airport Neighborhood project, “I have partaken in many projects that were interesting and beneficial for my personal growth, but they were never as important as this. Never has a piece of work I completed been conducted and real faces and places that fueled our desire to complete our work to the best of our ability.” This certainly reflects the impact of Dr. Helzer’s efforts in being involved in these critical community projects and allowing her students the opportunity to be a part of making a difference.

Outstanding Service in Faculty Governance: Ms. Renae Floyd
Renae Floyd, Psychological Counselor (SSP AAR), has been selected for the Outstanding Service in Faculty Governance Award. She has an impressive record of being actively involved in faculty governance by serving on several important committees during her tenure with the University. The extensive list includes, but is not limited to, University Educational Policies Committee, Academic Senate, Senate Executive Committee, Faculty Budget Advisory Committee, Faculty Affairs Committee, Committee on Committees, and the University Retention, Promotion and Tenure Committee. She is highly respected by her colleagues for her personal and professional integrity. She is noted to always have the best interests of the University in mind and is careful to fairly consider the perspectives of all constituencies. Because of her expertise in psychological counseling, she has played an important role in providing advice on approaches to sensitive situations. From all accounts, Ms. Floyd is highly praised for her exceptional service and commitment to shared governance and is a valued member of the University community.
