For the sixth consecutive year, geography students from CSU Stanislaus have claimed awards at the California Geographical Society's 67th Annual Conference, held this year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Winners from CSU Stanislaus at the April conference were:
• Aldo Garcia in the Digital Map Competition, for "Recreational Bicycling: An Interactive Online Map of Bicycle Trails Along the Stanislaus River, Ripon, Calif.";
• Marisa Hultgren for the Tom McKnight Undergraduate Paper Award, for "The Geography of Spies: Communism and American Intelligence in World War II"; and
• Elizabeth Machado, in the Graduate Poster Competition, for "Transnational Activities and its Impact on the Azorean Cultural Landscape in Southeastern Massachusetts."
The student researchers were supported by CSU Stanislaus geography professors Jennifer Helzer, Peggy Hauselt and Austin Avwunudiogba, administrative support assistant Susan Helm-Lauber, Cameron Pallotta in the university's geographic information systems laboratory, and Julie Fox and Brett Forray in the Office of Service Learning.
Founded in 1946, the California Geographical Society is the oldest and largest statewide organization devoted to enhancing the understanding of geography and promoting interaction among academic and applied geographers, as well as members of the general public who share an interest in geography. The organization's annual conference draws more than 400 professional geographers from around the state each spring.
