Students at Pitman and Turlock High Schools in Turlock will have the opportunity to earn college credit this spring through the California State University, Stanislaus Early College program.
Qualified juniors and seniors at the two Turlock high schools who have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 can participate in a series of classes offered through a special grant program that will be taught by CSU Stanislaus faculty. Pitman students can take a "Music of World Cultures" class this spring while those at Turlock High will be offered "Introduction to Cultural Anthropology." The two schools will switch class offerings during the fall semester later this year.
"At CSU Stanislaus, we are intent on doing our part to help students better prepare themselves for college success," CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. "We are excited about the impact this program will have on encouraging students to pursue a college degree and gain strong study skills."
Plans call for CSU Stanislaus classes to be offered at the two Turlock schools each year, giving students a strong head start on their college degree goals. Turlock Unified School District Superintendent, William H. Gibson, Ed.D. stated that "the District believes students should focus on attending college or be prepared to join a profession. The CSU Stanislaus classes will help Turlock students accomplish this goal."
CSU Stanislaus started offering the Early College classes last fall at Ceres High School and Benjamin Holt High School in Stockton. President Shirvani said the University plans to bring the classes to other high schools in the Northern San Joaquin Valley region as part of a drive to increase the percentage of high school students who attend four-year universities.
