California State University, Stanislaus will host the 2011 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship, University President Dr. Hamid Shirvani announced today.

The Championship will be held May 26 to 28, 2011, at the Al Brenda Track Facility on the Turlock campus.

The three-day event is expected to attract more than 1,000 student-athletes from across the nation. CBS will broadcast segments from all the NCAA Division II championships.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the University’s great athletic facilities and the region’s treasures,” said President Shirvani, who serves on the NCAA DII President's Commission. “I’m grateful to the delegation that traveled all the way to Indiana to make this possible.”

Turlock City Councilwoman Amy Bublak, an All American Track and Field athlete and CSU Stanislaus Hall of Famer, led the delegation to Indiana in October to bid for the honor of hosting the Championship. CSU Stanislaus Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Richards and Turlock Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Desa Basulto rounded out the team.

Turlock was selected to host the Championships because of its outstanding new facility, new hotels, restaurants, businesses and campus commitment to Athletics, according to Kim Duyst, CSU Stanislaus Associate Athletics Director and Chair of the NCAA DII Track and Field Committee.

The championship event will generate an estimated $500,000 in revenue for the City of Turlock and surrounding area, said Turlock Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitors Bureau CEO Sharon Silva.

“The event is an example of the partnership between the Chamber and the City of Turlock established by President Shirvani in his efforts to assist the Turlock Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau in attracting outside visitors to Turlock,” Silva added. “Turlock Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitors Bureau are very pleased with the partnership that we have with California State University, Stanislaus and its athletics department.”

The 2011 Track and Field Championships will be a big boost to both the City of Turlock business community and the greater Stanislaus County region, said Mark Hall, managing owner of the Monte Vista Crossings Shopping Center and Hotels.

“We congratulate President Hamid Shirvani, Athletic Director Milt Richards and all of the CSUS faculty and student body involved in securing this prestigious national athletic event. Go Warriors!" Hall added.

Additional information about the Championships will be announced closer to the event.
