California State University, Stanislaus students Kevin Bull and John Bultena, who elaborated on their favorite series of books, claimed the cash prizes in the 2007 Warrior Book Collection Contest.
Kevin Bull, a Business Management major from Scotts Valley near Santa Cruz, won the $300 first prize for his entry titled "Honor and Glory: The Warrior State of Mind." The second place award of $200 went to John Bultena, an interdisciplinary Studies graduate student from Merced for his submission titled "Over Three Decades of Adventures: A Dungeons and Dragons Collection."
The two students will receive their awards during a brief noon ceremony on Thursday, May 17, in the second floor foyer of the Vasche Library.
Bull, a student athlete who recently won the California Collegiate Athletic Association decathlon championship, explained that the bravery and friendship that was revealed in the adventure and conflict in Tolkien's "The Hobbit" sparked his desire to read and collect works that developed similar themes. Strategy and competition figure prominently in his collection, and Bull related these concepts to his own life experience, both as a participant in track and field and as a future businessman.
Bultena recalled that a childhood trip to Southern California led to his introduction to the specialty game "Dungeons and Dragons." His entry highlights his collection of books, which provide the rules, flexibility, and imagination that are key elements of the role-playing game he enjoys. Bultena said his collection and his intellectual development at CSU Stanislaus have sharpened his abilities as a player of the game.
The Warrior Book Collection Contest was inaugurated in 2005 by Brian Duggan, the University's Director of Media and Distance Learning. He used the prize money won in a Warrior Mascot Design Competition to start the program that encourages student enthusiasm for books and reading.
