A newly formed group called the Turlock Business Council that seeks to advise the City of Turlock on matters related to economic development is on tonight’s Turlock City Council agenda to be formally recognized.

The Turlock Business Council will advise the City Council on matters related to economic forecasting, economic development, business growth, and workforce development, providing best practices for building and promoting a healthy business climate that attracts new businesses and allows existing businesses to expand and thrive.

The members of the Business Council, who serve as chief executives for their companies and organizations, will develop business growth strategies, apply their entrepreneurial acumen to complex community challenges, and build networks to leverage resources across sectors.  Current members include Dr. Ham Shirvani, President of California State University, Stanislaus; Fred Brenda, President of Valley Tool and Manufacturing; Julie Heath, General Manager of Costco in Turlock; Dr. Jennifer Houston of the Romeo Medical Clinic; Michael Ireland, Jr. of Winton-Ireland, Strom, & Green; Mark Kirkes, President of Kirkes Electric; Matt Swanson, President of Associated Feed & Supply Co.; and Jim Vieira, President of P & F Metals.

Shirvani, who will serve as Chair of the Business Council, said, “Part of our objective will be to suggest strategies for recruiting new businesses and creating an environment that allows businesses to thrive in order to advance the City of Turlock’s economic health.  Businesses are at the core of a vibrant city and healthy community because they provide jobs and tax revenue.”

The Turlock Business Council also seeks to create greater alignment among the activities of business, government, education, media, health, and foundation/community-based efforts.  It will complement and expand upon existing organizations as they work toward a common goal of economic development within the City of Turlock.

Swanson, who also serves as President of the CSU Stanislaus Foundation Board, said, “It is refreshing to work with someone as progressive and action-oriented as Ham Shirvani.  The Turlock Business Council is one of his innovative ideas, and it would not be the same without his leadership in its inaugural year.  Those of us on the Business Council will not allow Idaho to steal him from us.  Many other internal and external constituencies, including the Foundation Board, have strongly shared this view that there is no way we will let him go.”

Members of the Turlock Business Council are available to speak to the media.  For contact information, please contact Kristin Olsen at 209-667-3610.
