Veteran Center
The campus Student Veteran Center’s open house this month highlighted its services and acknowledged University partners whose contributions have benefited student veterans.

The reception on March 3 in the lobby drew distinguished guests to campus including Mike Anderson Sr., veteran and military liaison from the office of Congressman Jeff Denham; Wounded Warrior Fellow Ricky Pal; and representatives from donors Wells Fargo, Swords to Plowshares and the Grainger Foundation.

During the reception, Anderson thanked President Joseph F. Sheley for his support of student veterans by presenting him with a flag that had flown over the state Capitol. The program also acknowledged vital donations, including $25,000 from Wells Fargo, $35,000 from Swords to Plowshares and $6,000 from the Grainger Foundation.

The center opened its dedicated space in Room 113 of the Student Services Building during the fall 2014 semester. The facility provides study areas, Wi-Fi access, a kitchenette and a lounge with a donated flat-screen television. Featured prominently in its decor are tributes to members of the armed forces.

Brian Escobar, president of the Student Veterans Club, credited the Student Veteran Center with helping him and fellow veterans feel supported. He plans to pay it forward by assisting others in his capacity as club president.

“Since the center opened, it has been a great asset,” Escobar said. “There is always a pot of coffee brewing for anyone in need, a place to unwind after a test and a chance to bond with fellow students.”

The Student Veteran Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays except Wednesday, when it closes at 4 p.m. The search is underway for a full-time Veterans Affairs coordinator to assist in determining eligibility for benefits and identifying resources.
