Sou Xiong
California State University, Stanislaus student Sou Xiong of Merced is participating in the Sacramento Semester program which provides participants with first-hand experience working in a legislative office.

A senior Political Science major at CSU Stanislaus, Xiong came to the United States with his family from Thailand at the age of five and attended Merced schools. He plans to enroll in the Master of Public Administration program at CSU Stanislaus this fall. Three of his brothers and sisters are also attending college as the first members of their family to pursue higher education.

As a member of this spring's Sacramento Semester internship program, which is coordinated through Sacramento State, Xiong has been placed in the Capitol office of State Senator Jeff Denham. Working closely with the Senator's legislative director, Xiong works on legislative issues, conducts research, writes fact sheets and requests for bills co-authored by Senator Denham, responds to a variety of constituent inquiries, and attends meetings.

Dr. Stephen Routh of the CSU Stanislaus Politics and Public Administration Department said Xiong's skills for the spot were demonstrated in his successful bid for acceptance to the highly competitive program. Out of 27 students in the state selected for the program, Xiong is one of only 12 from California campuses other than Sacramento State.
