Turlock, Calif. — California State University, Stanislaus is pleased to announce the appointment of Catherine “Cathy” Wooton as vice president for University Advancement, effective May 12, 2025.
Wooton brings more than three decades of experience in philanthropic advancement and higher education leadership. She joins Stanislaus State with a strong record of fostering strategic partnerships, championing student success and inspiring transformative philanthropy.
In her role as vice president, Wooton will lead the University’s development, alumni relations and advancement operations. She will guide efforts to deepen engagement with donors, alumni and the community while enhancing Stanislaus State’s philanthropic impact. Her leadership is expected to be pivotal in building a more inclusive and robust culture of giving — one that expands access to the University’s nationally ranked academic programs and supports the economic vitality of the Central Valley.
“We are thrilled to have the breadth of experience and high-caliber character that Ms. Wooton brings to the Stan State family,” said President Britt Rios-Ellis. “She is a leader whose career reflects a deep commitment to our student population and the communities we serve. Cathy will meet the challenges facing Stan State and higher education with integrity and a steadfast commitment to building a bright legacy for our beloved University.”
Wooton began her advancement career at her alma mater, University of the Pacific, where she served in a variety of roles during a 29-year tenure. As senior associate vice president for advancement, she led teams in advancement services, planned giving and annual giving, alumni engagement and campaign planning. Her leadership contributed significantly to Pacific’s landmark $125 million Powell Match program, which helped to establish numerous endowed scholarships and expand academic opportunities. Across her career, Wooton has played key roles in campaigns totaling more than $500 million.
Most recently, Wooton served as vice president for advancement at Idaho State University, where she strengthened advancement operations and doubled fundraising results. In fiscal year 2024, she secured $19 million in new commitments and cash. Her leadership there also included the successful completion of a $20 million scholarship campaign and the groundwork for a future comprehensive campaign.
“I am honored to join Stanislaus State and become part of a community so deeply committed to student success, equity and regional transformation,” Wooton said. “I look forward to returning to the Central Valley and working in partnership with President Rios-Ellis, the Advancement team and the broader campus and regional community to build meaningful connections that strengthen opportunities for our students and the future of the Central Valley.”
A proud first-generation college graduate, Wooton earned her bachelor’s degree cum laude in diversified studies from the University of the Pacific and pursued post-graduate studies in curriculum and instruction. She brings to Stan State a strong commitment to equity, community partnerships and the transformative power of higher education.
President Rios-Ellis also expressed appreciation for Dr. Rosalee Billingslea Rush, who has led the Division of University Advancement during the transition. Under her leadership, the University recently raised $542,172 during the “1960 Minutes of Giving” campaign. Rush will continue to serve on the president’s cabinet as vice president for strategic communications, marketing and partnership engagement.
Please join us in welcoming Cathy Wooton to Stanislaus State as we continue to advance our mission of access, excellence and impact in the Central Valley and beyond.
