Upper-division Undergrads and Teaching Credential Students Receive Scholarships and Accolades for Leadership Qualities, Academic Achievement, and Perseverance.
Twenty-five California State University (CSU), Stanislaus students, many of them having overcome challenges and obstacles in their lives to excel academically, have been honored as 2011-2012 Mary Stuart Rogers Scholars.
“An honor such as this is a wonderful way for the university and community to recognize and celebrate the choices and, sometimes, sacrifices you have made,” said Vice President of University Advancement Susana Gajic-Bruyea. “What should make you and your family proudest is not necessarily the honor – though it is great – but what you did to get it.”
Recipients of the 2011-12 scholarship awards were congratulated by June Rogers of the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation at an October 28 luncheon program on the CSU Stanislaus campus. This year’s group includes 15 undergraduate and 10 graduate students who have demonstrated academic talent and skills that place them at the top of their classes.
Many of their life’s stories are filled with determined motivation to succeed and inspiration:
· Carmen Gray – First Year Recipient – Carmen is a single mother of five girls—ages 19 to 4 years of age. Carmen transferred from Modesto Junior College to CSU Stanislaus in August 2010. Carmen received The Women of Distinction Scholarship from the Soroptomist Women’s Organization while at Modesto Junior College. She is a volunteer at Haven Women’s Center in Modesto and works at a juvenile rehabilitation center in Turlock.
· Hanybal Maragoul – First Year Recipient – As a young adult in Iran, Hanybal began working with numbers and gradually saw himself learning more and growing deeper into the field. By the age of 16, he had a full-time position as an accountant at a major manufacturing company. It became necessary for him to earn his degree in the United States to be able to work as an accountant. He was able to complete his courses while working as an accountant full time as well.
· Tonya Paris – First Time Recipient – Tonya enjoys mathematics, including math puzzles and riddles, math history, teaching math, and learning it. She is currently combining her knowledge of psychology and mathematics in the emerging area of study of the psychology of mathematics. She is particularly intrigued by ways a learner’s self-esteem affects his or her capacity to learn math.
The Rogers Scholarships are awarded to high-achieving upper-division undergraduate students and Teaching Credential program students at CSU Stanislaus. Since being founded in 1991 by the late Mary Stuart Rogers, the program has awarded more than $2.5 million in scholarships to more than 400 CSU Stanislaus students.
