Volunteers gathered to turn in pledges of support on Thursday, as the One Purpose campaign approached its halfway point. With three weeks of fundraising to go, One Purpose volunteers have raised $172,305 for scholarships for outstanding students.

Significant regional giving was evident in the third week of the campaign, with contributions from individuals and businesses in Turlock, Modesto and Hilmar.

Phaedra Norton of Turlock and John and Edith Jacinto of Modesto were among the most productive volunteers reporting from their respective communities. They tied as the top‑producing volunteers for Week 3, each bringing in 10 new pledge cards.

The community of Hilmar was well represented, with a gift from Hilmar Cheese Company at the $10,000 level — the highest tier for corporate gifts. A spokesman for the One Purpose campaign, Hilmar Cheese President and CEO John Jeter has spoken about his belief in investing in CSU Stanislaus students and their potential to uplift the region.

“We are so fortunate to have CSU Stanislaus in our community,” he said.

The teams of volunteers who have stepped forward to support student success have fostered this giving from across the region. They represent CSU Stanislaus faculty, staff and alumni, as well as community and business leaders, and their combined involvement recognizes the importance of higher education in supporting growth for the region.

“One Purpose involves a really diverse group of individuals who are dedicated to helping students,” said Julie Fox, a CSU Stanislaus staff member who is volunteering for One Purpose. “Our investment in CSU Stanislaus students will give us returns, because so many of our graduates stay and work in the Valley.”

Awareness about the campaign is continuing to spread in the community and on campus as faculty and staff volunteers share their fundraising progress. Students are beginning to notice the buzz too.

“I have met some of the students who are hearing about One Purpose and they have expressed both gratitude and excitement for the opportunity that these scholarships will provide,” said Jacqueline Holt, the University’s director of annual giving. “This enthusiasm from our students is truly motivating. Our goal is to provide students with the means for success — they are the inspiration for our campaign.”

Sally Souza, who is leading a team of volunteers with her husband Curt, recalled how scholarships encouraged her as a student.

“I know how important a scholarship can be, and as a college student, I worked hard to earn good grades for that very reason,” she said. “I believe that education opens doors, and I am proud to have a part in encouraging students to achieve their education and ultimately benefit our community.”
