California State University, Stanislaus President Joseph F. Sheley participated Friday as a member of a distinguished panel at the California Latino Leadership Education Summit hosted by Fresno State.
The two-day event, which sold-out and drew more than 600 participants, was designed to be an interactive forum addressing the barriers to and proposing solutions for ensuring educational success and equity for all students in the Central San Joaquin Valley.
Sheley was part of a panel discussing the topic “Pipeline Initiatives in the Central San Joaquin Valley.” The dais included California Community College Board Member Arnoldo Avalos, Porterville College President Rose Flores Carlson, Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro, UC Merced Chancellor Dorothy Leland and Cal State Bakersfield President Horace Mitchell. The discussion was facilitated by Jose Luis Santos, the vice president for higher education policy and practice for The Education Trust.
Following the panel discussion, California State University Chancellor Timothy P. White spoke to the gathering about the CSU’s challenges and initiatives.
Educational inequity and higher education initiatives also were discussed, and statistical profiles of education in the Valley were presented that analyzed college access and completion rates.
