Sponsored by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Center for Portuguese Studies, the program is titled “New Strategies for Combating Homelessness in Lisbon.”
Lucio, who taught classes as a Fulbright Faculty Scholar at CSU Stanislaus in 2005, will share the findings of his research team on the complexities of measuring poverty across societies. He will review the theoretical perspectives on poverty, exclusion, and homelessness; analyze strategies pursued during his time in the United States to assist the chronically homeless, especially New York City’s “Ten Year Plans;” and consider former and current strategies developed by Lisbon’s municipal authorities to help the homeless.
Teaching undergraduate and doctorate courses in Geography, Regional Planning, and Poverty Alleviation Strategies in Lisbon, Lucio focuses his research on poverty in metropolitan areas, social exclusion, and city development. Serving as a member of the Lisbon City Hall task force on homeless problems and his association with Columbia University in New York have given Lucio significant insight in his efforts to develop strategies to help the homeless of Lisbon.
