California State University, Stanislaus will present bachelor's and master's degrees to more than 2,100 students at its 48th Annual Commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31. Both programs start at 8 a.m. in the University Amphitheater where audience seats for more than 7,000 people will be set up for graduates' families and friends.

Highlighting the May 31 Commencement will be the presentation by CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani of an Honorary Degree of the Doctor of Humane Letters to Harry J. Pappas, the Modesto native who has established a group of successful television and radio stations all over the United States. Pappas is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pappas Telecasting Companies, the largest privately held commercial television group in the United States.

Recipients of the two top student awards will be announced and presented at the Friday, May 30 program. The Lee Metzger Award will reward a student with high academic achievement and the J. Burton Vasche Award goes to the student who displays the highest standards of leadership, cooperation, participation, service, and scholarship.

Graduates from the Colleges of the Arts, Human and Health Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences will receive their degrees on May 30 and those from the Colleges of Business Administration, Education, and Natural Sciences will march to the stage on May 31. More than 1,900 students have applied to receive bachelor's degrees and another 270 have earned master's degrees.

Student speaker presentations will be featured at both programs. Jean deGrassi, a Communication Studies Degree recipient who is an administrative support coordinator at the University's Stockton Center and resumed her college studies five years ago, will speak on Friday. Saturday's student speaker will be Elizabeth Hodge, an Operations Management major and Speech Communications minor from Turlock. Singing the national anthem and University alma mater will be Music majors Marcio De Oliveira of Turlock on Friday and Lauren Hosmer of Modesto on Saturday.

Additional seating will also be available in nearby Snider Recital Hall where both programs can be viewed by simulcast. The two ceremonies can also be viewed live on the University's commencement website at www.csustan.edu.
