TURLOCK, CA—Apr. 10, 2012 — California State University (CSU), Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani announced today that University of San Diego Senior Associate Director of Athletics Michael Matoso has been offered and has accepted the position of athletic director. He will officially start at CSU Stanislaus on May 21, 2012.

“I am very pleased to make this appointment,” said President Shirvani. “Michael Matoso is an accomplished leader with a wide range of experience in administration, fundraising, strategic planning and NCAA compliance. I am confident he will have an immediate positive impact, and will take our athletics programs and student athletes to higher levels of excellence.”

“I am really looking forward to the opportunity to showcase the university, Warrior Athletics and the City of Turlock,” said Matoso. “Building the community within the athletics department, improving linkages with the region and setting common goals to improve athletics programs will be among my first focus areas.”

“Throughout the search, it became clear that Michael is well known for his passion for athletics, commitment to student athletes and strong knowledge of best practices in collegiate athletics,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs James Strong.

Matoso has been with the University of San Diego (USD) since 1999. He served as senior associate director of athletics (2005 - 2012), associate director of athletics for compliance and administration 2000 - 2005) and academic support coordinator (1999 - 2000). At USD, he contributed to oversight of a department with 17 NCAA Division I teams and 450 student athletes. Further, Matoso was instrumental in helping the USD Toreros win the West Coast Conference (WCC) Commissioner’s Cup four straight years—the only program in conference history to do so.  The Commissioner’s Cup honors the school with the best athletic department.

Immediately prior, Matoso was academic counselor to the football and baseball programs at the University of Southern California (1996 - 1999) and graduate advisor for the athletic programs at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Matoso earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s degree in education, both from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Michael and his wife Kelly have three children: Abigail (11), Cole (8) and Brody (5).
