Twenty California State University, Stanislaus students who have been awarded scholarships for 2007-08 as Mary Stuart Rogers Scholars come from a variety of backgrounds but share a trademark for academic success and helping others.
Texas Keo of Ripon, who is a guardian of four of her siblings, has realized her dream of becoming a teacher with Rogers Scholarship assistance. Melanie Almada of Hilmar tutors autistic children. Areli Dohner-Chavez of Patterson is one of several Rogers Scholar recipients who came to the United States from another country, are the first in their families to go to college, and are excelling as honors students. Hellen Arguelles Gudino of Hughson has made a determined academic comeback since dropping out of high school and received nine scholarships in recognition of her achievements. Joseph Jennings of Modesto is the father of three children who plans to become an elementary school teacher. Rosemary Mulhim of Turlock is planning for a career in molecular biology research. Mariana Sandoval, a Computer Information Systems major from Ceres, tutors in the Help One Student to Succeed (HOSTS) program and has set a goal of starting her own research company.
Awarded through the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation, under the direction of John and June Rogers of Hughson, the scholarships go to high-achieving upper-division undergraduate students and teacher credential students at CSU Stanislaus. Since being founded 16 years ago by the late Mary Stuart Rogers, the program has awarded scholarships and specially engraved rings to more than 400 CSU Stanislaus students. They receive varying amounts of financial assistance based on their need to help them fund their degree and teaching goals.
