The Center for Portuguese Studies at California State University, Stanislaus invites the community to attend a reception and talk celebrating the spirit and history of the Azores, homeland of many San Joaquin Valley families.

WHAT: The event is geared toward second and third generation Portuguese-Americans who want to learn more about their heritage through a talk entitled “Azores: Spirit and History of a Portuguese Culture.”

WHO: Dr. Susana Goulart Costa of the Department of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences at the University of the Azores is an author of several articles and books including “Azores, Nine Islands, One History.”
The event is hosted by the Center for Portuguese Studies at CSU Stanislaus. The Center’s director, Dr. Elmano Costa has been a longtime supporter of Portuguese scholarly exchanges and education for Central Valley residents.

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

WHERE: The estate of Joe and Mary Bettencourt, East Lake Ranch, 14011 East Ave., Turlock
Seating is limited.

WHY: The San Joaquin Valley’s Portuguese heritage is rich and deeply rooted in the region’s agriculture. The wave of immigration from the Azores to the Valley subsided in the 1980s but is evidenced by the many summer festas and family names throughout the region. That heritage will be celebrated at the Oct. 23 reception and talk featuring Dr. Susana Goulart Costa.
