Kaiser Permanente has generously donated $90,000 to California State University, Stanislaus to support the University's expanding Nursing Program. The contribution will fund a Kaiser Permanente Scholarship in Nursing as well as a faculty position in the Nursing Program.
$30,000 of the Kaiser donation will be used to award 10 scholarships of $3,000 each for students enrolling in the University's Nursing Program. Scholarship recipients will participate in Kaiser Permanente sponsored community health outreach and education programs during one period of their nursing education.
The remaining $60,000 will support a faculty position in the Learning Resource Center of the Nursing Program, which will enhance the teaching ability of the department through a Laboratory/Simulation Center Coordinator.
University President, Dr. Hamid Shirvani, said, "The University is proud to have solid partners like Kaiser Permanente that help us educate and train tomorrow's workforce. There is a tremendous need for more nurses in the Central Valley, and Kaiser's generous support helps us continue to address that need through our nationally-accredited nursing degree program."
Dr. Gary Novak, Dean of the College of Human and Health Sciences, said, "We value our partnership with Kaiser Permanente and look forward to making a difference with them. This gift from Kaiser will greatly benefit our nursing students and faculty."
Dr. Moses Elam, Physician in Chief for The Permanente Medical Group and CSU Stanislaus Foundation Board member, said, "We are excited and passionate about our educational partnerships that provide assistance to students eager to enter the field of healthcare. We are proud to support the education of these nurses who will help fill the need for healthcare services throughout the Central Valley."
The CSU Stanislaus Nursing Program has accepted 40 students annually. A state grant provided in Governor Schwarzenegger's '07-'08 budget is allowing the University to expand its program in January to enroll 70 students annually. CSU Stanislaus continually looks for ways to expand its nursing program to help meet the demand for nursing professionals in the San Joaquin Valley. The University's partnership with Kaiser Permanente significantly advances these objectives.
