CSU Stanislaus hosted more than 400 elementary and middle school students recently for performances by Boston Brass at Snider Recital Hall. The internationally known ensemble performed selections from its scheduled concert at Turlock Community Auditorium and talked and joked with the students about playing, practicing and enjoying music throughout their lives.
The appearance was the result of a partnership between Turlock Concert Association (TCA), Turlock Rotary Club and CSU Stanislaus. Event organizer Donna Pierce, a TCA board member with close ties to the university, observed that some students were seeing and hearing some of the musical instruments played for the first time. “You could see them becoming motivated to become musicians themselves,” she said. “One boy went straight home and announced, ‘I need trumpet lessons!’”
The students — from Dennis Earl Elementary, Dutcher and Turlock junior high schools and eCademy Charter School — were enthusiastic participants, clapping and cheering during the lively performances and engaging actively in the Q&A with the musicians.
