Now that the inaugural California State University, Stanislaus Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership degree program has been successfully launched, preparations are being made to accept a second cohort of doctoral candidates by June 2009.

CSU Stanislaus will start accepting applications for the second cohort on December 1, with a priority deadline set for February 16, 2009. Founding Doctoral Program Director Dr. Steven K. Lee said that a series of information sessions on the program are scheduled from November 18 through January 29.

Designed for educators interested in earning a doctorate to advance their careers in education, the groundbreaking program opened in September with a full cohort of 29 students. The three-year program is designed to meet the need for highly trained educational leaders in the Central Valley. Two specializations are offered -- one in leadership for preschool to grade 12 schools and the other for community college leadership.

"We have had tremendous response, ranging from classroom teachers and college professors to district superintendents and college administrators," Lee said. "It is a professionally-based program that allows candidates to conduct research within their own educational organizations as part of the process."

Classes are held in the evenings to accommodate working professionals.  Many of the courses are designed so that a significant portion of class requirements can be fulfilled online via the Web.

A new addition to the program's full-time faculty for the fall startup is former Columbia College President Dr. Jim Riggs. He has 30 years of administrative and teaching experience at the community college level and a doctorate in educational leadership from USC.

Information sessions are scheduled for November 18 at Modesto Junior College, December 3 and January 6 and 29 on the CSU Stanislaus campus, December 10 at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, January 15 at Merced College, and January 26 in Sonora.
