A free two-week camp to give girls entering the 11th and 12th grades or who are recent high school graduates the tools to successfully manage their personal finances will be held July 6-15 at California State University, Stanislaus. Openings are still available for the program that gets under way on Tuesday, July 6.
The camp is called Financial Awareness Means Equity (FAME) and is funded by a grant from the American Association of University Women. Topics to be addressed include budgeting, savings and checking accounts, debit and credit cards, and financing cars and a college education.
“Management of personal finances is important for everybody, of course, but the AAUW has a particular interest in promoting equity among young women,” said Viji Sundar, a professor of mathematics at CSU Stanislaus who has initiated numerous summer instructional programs for teachers school-age students. “When young women are confident in taking responsibility for their own resources it helps them manage their life, assure their future, and accomplish their dreams.”
During the camp, activities will be held on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A closing reception will be held on July 15.
The camp’s faculty members will include professor Sundar and CSU Stanislaus colleagues including accounting professor Lynn Johnson, computer science assistant professor Melanie Martin, and Erin Curenta of the university’s High School Mathematics Access Program.
Applications can be downloaded at the event Web site: http://www.csustan.edu/math/Pages/GrantsPrograms.php
In addition to support from the AAUW, the camp is under the auspices of the CSU Stanislaus Math and Science Teacher Initiative and the High School Mathematics Access Program.
