TURLOCK — The athletics department at California State University, Stanislaus, announced today a combination of gifts that will fund much-needed facilities projects. The upgrades will enhance the university's student-athlete experience and improve recruiting efforts.
A group of donors led by CSU Stanislaus Foundation Board member Matt Swanson and his wife, Maria, have pledged nearly $250,000 to cover expenses and materials for extensive renovations to the men's and women's locker rooms for the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors' basketball teams, as well as a new batting cage for the baseball team.
"We are extremely thankful for these gifts," Director of Athletics Michael Matoso said. "They will have an immediate impact on three of our programs with respect to recruiting and improving the performance and experience for our student-athletes."
The renovations in the men's and women's basketball locker rooms will include new flooring, seating and lockers, along with new paint and repaired lighting fixtures. Audio/visual equipment will also be installed, allowing the teams to review game film.
The baseball team's current batting cage, which consists of simple poles and netting, will be replaced by an indoor cage enclosed in a metal building in the same location. The new cage will provide a covered, lighted facility that will give the team the ability to practice in all weather conditions and at night.
Swanson, a former president of the Foundation Board, donated the cost of materials, equipment and fees for the new batting cage and helped secure an in-kind donation of labor for the project from Turlock-based M.P. Miranda Construction.
He then decided to fund the men's locker room renovation, as well. Maria Swanson, his wife, teamed with board member Kimberly Clauss Jorritsma and Julie Vieira, wife of board member Jim Vieira, to fund the women's locker room renovation.
"It was important for me and my family to make a gift to Warrior Athletics for two main reasons — to attract the best student-athletes and to retain quality coaches and staff," Matt Swanson said. "State-of-the-art facilities are critical to these goals. We view this as a home run."
