The College of the Arts’ Department of Theatre at California State University, Stanislaus is proud to present Machinal, a play by Sophie Treadwell.

In 1928, Brooks Atkinson wrote in the New York Times: “Bay Area Native, Sophie Treadwell’s play Machinal is a crowning achievement in American Expressionism. It is the only play in recent times worthy of presentation…. It will be relevant beyond the present moment…. detached, impersonal, and abstract, it is timeless.”

Machinal is concerned with the social position of women. A young woman struggles for equality and independence as well as the inherent conflict between modernism and traditional values and the relationship between love and murder.

Author Sophie Treadwell, bay area resident, was a journalist, novelist, actor and producer. Over the course of 84 years, she wrote four novels, hundreds of newspaper stories and 30 plays (6 produced on Broadway).

The production runs October 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24 at 8 pm in the Studio Theatre with matinees on October 18 & 25 at 2 pm.

The Studio Theatre is located in the north hallway of the Drama Building on the CSU campus at One University Circle in Turlock.
